Media law has traditionally focused on public broadcasting networks as a centrally organised and publicly funded ‘public service’. With growing competition from commercial broadcasters and the proliferation of a vast array of freely available public information platforms, this paradigm no longer holds. At the same time, mass digitisation of audio-visual archives may justify new public service mandates. Internet law is becoming a defining factor of the public service media of the future. This panel looks at the different content regulations and norms on public service media in Europe and delves into models for the future.
